The Vision Behind Syzygy Science

Meet the Founder: Jeffrey Mann

I'm Jeffrey Mann, founder of Syzygy Science.

Syzygy didn't start as a curriculum company. It started in rooms full of teachers.

When districts were first making sense of NGSS, I worked directly with schools and educational organizations to help them through it. Workshops, conferences, video training, and curriculum for programs that need science to work in classrooms and field settings alike. The work was about translation: taking standards off the page and making them feel teachable.

In 2020, that work shifted toward curriculum design. And the more I wrote, the more something started bothering me. Most lab experiences were built around a predetermined answer. Students were doing "inquiry," but the path was narrow, and the ending was already written. Standards were met. Boxes were checked. But the intellectual work wasn't honest.

That realization led to a question: What does it look like to design for real inquiry, not the performance of it?

From that question, the Syzygy Cluster Design Model was born. It's grounded in NGSS, particularly the Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts, but it organizes learning into coherent clusters of experience rather than isolated lessons. Ideas develop over time. They recur. They connect. The goal isn't coverage; it's understanding.

The word syzygy means alignment. In astronomy, it describes celestial bodies lining up. In education, I think of it as experience, standards, and intellectual honesty coming together. When those things align, inquiry becomes less scripted and more real.

That's what Syzygy Science is here to build.

Our Mission

To transform ideas into instruction through intentional design. We don’t just train teachers—we equip them with tools, purpose, and strategy that carry through to students. We don’t just write curriculum—we embed it in classrooms so it can shape learning where it matters most.

What We Do

  • Curriculum Services
Partnering with you to imagine, co-design, and implement NGSS-connected curriculum. Whether you’re an NGO with a new scientific focus, a district reevaluating your scope and sequence, or a company with an educational initiative, we help translate your ideas into classroom-ready units grounded in real phenomena.

  • Staff Training & Assistance
We offer intentional professional learning experiences—online, in-person, or hybrid—that meet teachers where they are. Through coaching, modeling, and generative planning, we build educator capacity and lift the instructional skills needed to teach complex science effectively.

  • Custom Curriculum Writing
Beyond classroom coaching, we offer end-to-end design and development. We guide clients from ideation to lesson sequencing to alignment protocols—delivering polished, evidence-based, and student-tested curriculum materials that align with the Framework and NGSS.

  • NGSS Resource Library
A growing collection of lab books expertly crafted for classroom use. Our current titles include:

    • Non-violent Forensics — High-engagement investigations without sensationalism

    • NGSS Biology Lab Book — Thirty phenomenon-based labs with step-by-step standard linkages

    • NGSS Physics Lab Book — Hands-on explorations in motion, energy, and systems thinking

Who We Serve

  • District Leaders & Curriculum Teams — seeking coherent pathways from vision to classroom impact

  • K–12 Teachers & Instructional Staff — needing ready-to-use, standards-aligned materials and intentional coaching support

  • Mission-Driven Organizations & Businesses — looking to translate scientific content into pedagogically rich learning experiences

Why We’re Different

  1. Systems-& Story-Driven Design
Our curriculum architecture is inspired equally by NGSS and narrative coherence—each unit tells a scientific story as authentic as it is educative.

  2. Ethical Inquiry & Real Phenomena
Whether in forensics, biology, or physics, our materials center curiosity, not spectacle—using real-world contexts that spark ethical awareness and scientific reasoning.

  3. Teacher-Centered, Classroom-Tested
Every product and service comes from hands-on iteration with teachers, ensuring clarity, usability, and student relevance from day one.

Join Us on the Journey

We believe science education can be rigorous, revelatory, and deeply human. Whether you’re ready to co-create custom curriculum, develop your instructional capacity, or explore our NGSS lab books, let’s build something that matters—together.
