Forensic Science Lab Book

A framework for genuine three-dimensional science inquiry.

The FSI Lab Book is a non-violent forensic science course in eight units. Skills labs (LAB) teach the methods of the discipline. Activities (ACT) assess those skills inside a problem students have to solve. Flex labs (FLX) drop into the sequence where a teacher needs them. The course closes with a full mock investigation and a capstone in which student groups build a case for other groups to solve.

Forensic Science LAB 001: Introduction to Forensic Science Labs

The first lab of the book (Unit 1, LAB 1) and the entry to the Non-Violent Forensic Science series. A forensic analyst and a chemistry student each leave a sample container unsealed, and students develop an explanation for why the same action ruins a school result and can compromise a legal case. Across two periods students read a paired text, analyze a lab scene for procedural and ethical hazards, rank the hazards against explicit criteria, and build a claim with evidence and reasoning. Teacher guide, student reading in standard and differentiated versions, activities, and a set of hazard cards. 36 pages. Grades 9-12.

Halloween Forensic Science Mystery Cases: Two Whodunit Investigations

Two complete one-period cases. In The Disappearance of the Midnight Sapphire, a gemstone vanishes from its display case during a gala at the Museum of Antiquities. In The Case of the Purloined Plume, a famous feather disappears during a costume gala, and the case turns in part on whether a crime was committed at all. Each group works a case file with five evidence items, tracks suspects on a grid, and files a claim; the teacher edition carries the full solutions and the reasoning behind them. The materials carry no Halloween content and run in any month. 22 pages. Grades 7-12.
